Fantasy Football Championships

This football season, I took part in three different leagues.  I had the fifth year of my local ten-person league with a bunch of friends from around the area.  I took part in the second year of my extended family’s twelve-person football league.  And at the request of my coworkers, I created a ten-person league in my office.

I have to say, overall I’m pleased with my season.  I drafted for my work league first with a number of people who had never played before, and a few veterans.  I was hurt a little by Jamaal Charles’ inconsistent play, and by Hakeem Nicks and Aaron Hernandez taking long breaks for injuries.  LeSean McCoy had trouble meeting his expectations, but Adrian Peterson made up for that.  I finished out the regular season in third place and last week I topped the second place team to head into the finals.  Next week I play against an undefeated team to try to hold the trophy high.

My second draft was for my local league with my buddies.  The previous season I had made it to second place, so I was drafting late in the order.  I took Chris Johnson with my first pick (ugg…) and then wrapped around to get Adrian Peterson with my second (yay!).  I started out slow, taking a 1-2 spot, and then went on a long winning streak to vault into first place behind a number of 120+ point games.  Right around the middle of the season, though, my team fell apart as Vick was injured, I had to trade a starting Receiver to get another QB, Rob Gronkowski broke his arm, and then McGahee became injured too.  Somewhere in there, the Bears lost a few good starters on Defense too.  From there it seemed for a week or two anyone I picked up to count on would be on IR the next week.  I limped through the last four weeks of the regular season putting up a miraculous 2-2 finish (my two wins were for a combined less than two points) and managed to hold on to my first place spot.  I faced my wife in the first round of the playoffs and she defeated me easily, leaving me battling for 3rd place next week.  It’s okay, though.  I have made fourth place in this league every year that I’ve been in it save last year when I managed to crawl to second place.  Now it looks like I’m back to my comfortable position.

The last draft of the year was with my extended family.  We are spread out between Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut, and Vermont, so we drafted online.  I had a chance for Adrian Peterson but felt taking him in all three leagues would be a risk given his questionable health.  Instead I ended up with a decent team led by Tom Brady.  I started out slowly but managed to start putting together a string of wins and by the end of the regular season, I was in fourth place and coming in with a good streak going.  This league let eight players into the playoffs, so it is a three-week affair.  I topped the previous year’s second-place team in the first round while the first and second place teams from this year both lost their opening round game.  The second round I faced off against my mother and while my team did pretty bad, hers did even worse and managed a league-season-low 30-something points.  Now I’m moving in to the finals against my cousin Christian.

Regardless of how it all goes, after this coming weekend, fantasy football will be all done for the year.  Running three teams was a lot of work.  I think ideally I’d play in only one or two leagues in the future, but I don’t think it’ll be easy to drop any of them.  I enjoy the one with my friends too much, and the one with my family helps keep me in touch with them.  The work one would be the odd one out, but I’m pretty sure if I don’t run it, it won’t happen, and then I’ll have some people unhappy with me.

No sense in worrying about that now, though.  I’ve got two Championship games to plan for!

Fantasy Football Launch 2012

Football season is gearing up.  I guess it’s been going on for a little while now what with the preseason and all, but they’re about to launch into the actual regular season.  This year’s got a bit to be excited about: RG3 is in town and the Redskins have a good receiving core.  Dez Bryant is proving the Cowboys a classy organization.  And Tom Brady’s got some solid weapons around him to make another run for the title.

 

This year I’m in three different fantasy football teams:

There’s the long-standing league I am in with my friends around home.  This is going into the fifth season.  I ended in second place last season (the league is rapidly becoming one in which nine players fight for second place and one player takes first), so I’ve got nowhere to go but down.  I’ve made the playoffs every season so far, so I just need to stay in the top four to keep that streak alive.

I’m heading in to the second season of my family league too.  This one is getting a late start, drafting next week.  Last year this league had 14 players, though a few stopped paying much attention as the league went on.  We’ll probably drop a few players before the draft and might have a more manageable number.  Despite starting at a pretty pathetic 0-5 or something last year, I managed to make the playoffs though I was bounced by the top team from the regular season.

And the third league this year is with my coworkers.  A lot of them have never done fantasy football before, so their draft was kind of hilarious.  I spent a while trying to teach them better ways to draft, and talked to them during the draft about better decisions they could make, but it still resulted in some funny picks.

So for the two teams I have already drafted, here’s how my early teams look:

Home League (Drafted 9 out of 10)

This league allows for two keepers with the following stipulations: they take up the draft position of the previous situation, they cannot have been kept the previous season (by anyone), and they cannot have been picked in rounds 1 or 2.  If you picked up the player off waivers, they count as a 10th round draft pick.  This season I kept Eric Decker in the 9th round and Rob Gronkowski in the 10th.

I’m nervous about my QB situation.  I did not get any of the big names early and so I held out until I was the 9th QB off the board in the 8th round.  I wanted to swing back around and grab Andrew Luck to back him up, but he was gone before I got another draft.   Nick Foles has been doing pretty well in the preseason and there’s the advantage that if Michael Vick isn’t playing, Nick Foles will be.  We’ll see how the season plays out, though.  I may well be dropping Foles for someone else down the road, but I should have a few weeks before I have to worry about that.

Work League (Drafted 6 out of 10)

Ended up with a very solid team in this league, again because I think a lot of people did not know how to draft better for Fantasy Football.  Two players were huge fans of their own team (Green Bay and New Orleans) and drafted heavily from their own teams to the detriment of their Fantasy teams.

Once again, I’m a little nervous about my QB situation, though not as much as my other league.  Add to that the fact I’m pretty sure I’ll have an easier time finding a good backup in this league than in the home league and I’m pretty happy.

Drafting in both leagues was an unusual experience.  I found a few solid RBs early in the draft, but pretty quickly the quality dropped off or the RBs had huge question marks next to them.  There were a lot of solid WRs and in my second league, not picking up a WR until round 4, I still ended up with Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Lloyd to lead things off, with Jeremy Maclin, Reggie Wayne, and Pierre Garcon to back them up.

Looking forward to seeing how the season goes, both in the regular season and in the fantasy season.  September’s just around the corner!

Fantasy Football 2011

I just drafted for both of my fantasy football teams this year. We’re a couple days before the kickoff of the season and I’ve still got that hopeful look in my eye. Of course it’ll be slashed a few weeks into the season, but that’s alright. It’ll still be a bundle of fun all the way.

The first league is the one I’ve been in for several years now. This will be the fourth season, and for the past three seasons, I have made it to 4th place, but no farther. I’m the only person to make it to the playoffs all three years, but also the only person to make it to the playoffs and never win. We play with ten teams, two keepers a year (kept the same slot they were the previous year, but cannot be kept two years in a row, and cannot keep anyone from the first two rounds). I was able to keep LeSean McCoy in the 4th round and Peyton Hillis in the 10th.

I did not intend to lead with a QB in the first round. I was hoping to grab one swinging back around in the second round, but when the keepers were announced at the beginning of the draft, Brees, Rivers and Vick were already off the board. I really wanted to get one of the top five QBs (poor Manning didn’t make the cut this year) which meant that I needed either Brady or Rodgers. I was the 7th pick in the draft, which meant I wouldn’t get another until the 14th pick. A lot of time for both Rodgers and Brady to be snatched up before me. I probably could have gotten one on the return swing, but I didn’t want to risk it. So instead of getting Andre Johnson for the third year straight, I held off and picked up Rodgers and Roddy White.

Drafting Austin Collie was a little bit of a stretch for me, especially with Manning’s health a big question-mark. But I figured it would probably pay off later down the stretch. I have enough receivers without Collie that I can keep him on the bench for a little while.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with this team. I took a hit at RB this season, relying mostly on my keepers to keep me afloat, but I think I’m pretty strong everywhere else. Except Kicker. I should probably get myself one of them before the games start.



My second league is a new one for this year. My extended family from my mother’s side decided we’d all jump in to a new league. After emails circled around, we ended up with a monster 14-person league. This one will also have keepers starting next year – they can be anyone from 5th round or later, and only two keepers. I think. Maybe one. I didn’t really pay attention to it this year since it doesn’t matter yet.

I convinced my mom to join too, so I was helping her out with her draft and picks as we went through. I picked 9th out of 14.

I made a couple of bad calls here – like passing on Chris Johnson with the first pick only to find that he ended his holdout the very next day, and grabbing Greg Jennings when Calvin Johnson was still on the board. I didn’t even have him on my radar as I figured he’d already have been picked when it came to my draft, so I was already queued with a different receiver.

I also did not get the high QB I was hoping to draft, but that’s largely because the 14th person in the draft ended up picking two QBs back-to-back and then the whole string of them got taken before my turn to go. Every time I had someone targeted in a round, someone else drafted them a few picks before me and before I knew it, I was the only team without a QB so I picked up Bradford to hold me over.


Overall, though, I’m pretty happy with both teams. My first league is a little more competitive, though it will end up with far more good players out on waivers too. My family league is going to be a bit harder with only five people on the bench and slim pickings on the waiver wires. We’ll see how the year goes, but however it does, I’m just glad that there’s more football back in store.

A Weekend of Gaming

This past weekend promised to be a weekend filled with all manner of adventures and delivered. I know this post will probably run long, so I'll break it up into different categories and feel free to skip to whichever one you'd like.



Grimm
We started out on Friday night with Grimm, the roleplaying game I've been starting up since the Halloween one-shot was so well received. The characters, all junior high kids, found themselves in a mix of several fairy tales including well known ones like Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty, as well as some lesser known ones like The King of Golden Mountain. After a long grueling series of tasks, they set free the Prince of the Kingdom Over Yonder and he set forth to rescue his Princess, Sleeping Beauty. The kids, meanwhile, headed back home, and were surprised to find that they actually got back to the real world. Only things were not as they seemed - small changes had crept in to their world. Instead of winning their last football game, they lost. All because Dan, their star QB, had quit the team months earlier. Brian and Ellen found that their characters, who were ambivalent towards each other before, were dating. And Mary had been relegated to the ensemble in the school play while Laura was given the star role. Only Jay seemed untouched by the changes. Now the characters have to figure out what happened to change their reality, and how to change it back.

All in all, a really good session, and caps the introduction to the story. Looking forward to picking it up again and seeing how the characters deal with their newfound situation.


Monsterpocalypse

After a long break from the game, Dan and I pulled out our MonPoc for another game. It was a fun game to play, but due to the way it was marketed and produced, we lost interest in it (check out this post if you're curious). I brought out one of my Martians that I'd never played, and Dan hit the table with one of his infrequently-used dinosaurs (it shows how long it's been since we played that I don't remember what they're called).

The game took about an hour on Saturday morning, and we had a blast. We crushed nearly the entire city under our monsters' throws and slams, and in the end, I had brought Dan's monster down to two life when he finished me off. As we were packing up, Dan realized that he could not have done as much damage to my monster as he had, and I should have had somewhere around 3-4 life left, not 1, and would have been able to smash his monster the next turn. We'll call it a mulligan - things may have gone differently, or may not. Point is, we had fun smashing buildings again.

I don't think the game will come out frequently, but it was a nice start to Saturday, which promised to be a huge day of gaming.


Malifaux

After MonPoc, I got in a couple of games with the Dreamer. First I faced off against Dan and his McMourning crew. I was pulling off a really good rout of his models, but in the end, he was able to distract me from my main goals while achieving his, and when I finally finished slaughtering everything I could, I was about a turn shy of reaching my goal. I lost the my first match-up with the Dreamer.

The second game I played against Convy's Marcus army. The game could not have gone better for me or worse for him, and I ended up pulling off an incredibly one-sided victory. It was Convy's first time seeing the Dreamer's antics and just what the little boy could do. Next time I'm sure he'll come in stronger.


Touch of Evil

After a quick break for a late lunch, we came back and got in a game of A Touch of Evil. John, Ellen, Dan, Convy, Chris and I all faced off against a Warewolf that was terrorizing the town. We decided, as it was all of our first game other than John, that we should try to play this one cooperatively. We had a few missteps along the way, but Convy was able to root out the Warewolf's lair, John called the hunt, and we all rushed in to fight the beast. The fight was bloody and brutal and John, Convy and Chris all got knocked down and had to leap off the covered bridge into the cold river and swim to safety, but I was able to put the finishing blow on the Warewolf and we saved the town.

Overall, a really fun game. I was hesitant when I first heard about it, mostly because I wasn't sure how it would stand against Arkham, but in the end, I was pleasantly surprised. It's a much faster game (and much less involved), yet still holds a lot of theme. Dan has asked for it for Christmas - hopefully he'll get it and we'll be able to get some more tries with it.


Football

Finally, on Sunday, the first week of the playoffs hit for us. I faced Ryan, and despite outscoring him by an average of 20 points each game of the season, I lost to him for the second time this season, 80-88. To make matters worse, my pick'em was so bad this week that I slipped from tied for first to third place, only getting 6 of the 16 games picked correctly. Now I'm out of the fantasy running, and I've got to catch up with only two weeks remaining in the season on pick'em. Not a great showing for football this week.

Ah well, there's always next season. If I lose this weekend against Ellen (likely - she was the number one ranked team during the regular season, and rightfully so with her team), it will be the third season (out of three we've had this league) where I've made the playoffs and then dropped both games, ending in fourth place.

One day I'll crack the top three.


Anywho, so that was my weekend. Lots of gaming and hit all the major types for me - roleplaying, miniatures, board games and football. Only thing missing were computer games.

Speaking of which, Dragon Age Two should be coming out sometime next year...

Fantasy Football Playoffs

I realized I haven't updated anything of fantasy football since the fourth week when I was hovering at 2-2. Well, we start our playoffs this weekend and I managed to crack into the top four, so for the third year in a row, I'll be playing for the top spot. Of course, in both previous years I went 0-2 in the playoffs and ended up in fourth place, but THIS might be the year it all changes!

I ended up in third place at the end of the regular season with an 8-6 record. Ellen took the top spot at 12-2, Ryan the second at 9-5, and Joe took the fourth spot at 7-7 despite starting the season 0-3.

My team has been carried primarily by its running backs, but I feel like I've got a decent spread. My starters tend to be Tom Brady at QB, Peyton Hillis, LeSean McCoy and Ahmad Bradshaw at RB (we have a flex RB/WR/TE position that I usually fill with a RB), Andre Johnson and Steven Johnson at WR, and Jacob Tamme at TE. My kicker's been Lawrence Tynes of the NY Giants for a while, and he's done alright. I tend to switch up my defenses as the season goes, trying to get matchups. Some weeks that's great. Other weeks it's pretty terrible.

My bench consists of LaDainain Tomlinson and Ricky Williams, Brandon Marshall and Austin Collie, and Chris Cooley. I rotate the other slot to whatever I think might work well that week.

I face off against Ryan this week, and he's got an odd team. He holds a low overall score, but keeps getting matchups that give him wins. I've outscored him 11 out of 14 weeks, but he managed to grab me for one of those three he beat me in the regular season and we split our games, 1-1.

Anywho, glad to have made the top four. I would like to move beyond my normal 4th place prize this season. Just two more weeks to go...

Glutton for Punishment

ESPN just reported that for our game this weekend, the Redskins are going to bench McNabb in favor of Rex Grossman. I'm usually fairly stalwart in my support for the Redskins, but this is just beyond ridiculous. This whole situation makes makes me irate. Yes, we're losing games. But to lay that at McNabb's feet?

We're out of the playoffs. The only reason to bench McNabb at this point is if you think Grossman is possibly our future quarterback. We have a contract we can get out of with McNabb - let him finish out the season and see if this offense can gel! I know it hasn't yet, but give it the whole season. We don't lose anything by doing that.

Look what McNabb's got to work with. We have a subpar o-line, a subpar running game, a subpar receiving corps, and a subpar defense. Of course he's not performing well.

I think at the end of the year, we're going to cut ties with McNabb and draft a QB high in the draft. Unfortunate, in my opinion. I like the idea of drafting a new QB, but put him behind McNabb for a year and see what he can learn - take a couple drafts to strengthen our o-line so we don't end up killing the QB like we did with Campbell. Take a couple seasons and actually rebuild the team correctly!

Gah... I'm very mad right now. At least my second team is doing well - go Pats!

Football Update

So we're four weeks into the season and things are going... okay.

Redskins: 2-2 (2-0 in the division)
Fantasy: 2-2

I'll talk a little about the Redskins first. I have to admit, I'm thrilled with the wins over Dallas and Philadelphia. They don't make the games easy on their fans, that's for sure, what with putting the games within a score and giving the opponents a drive down the field at the end both times, but they managed to win in the end, and that's what matters.

In week 2 we brought Houston to overtime before losing to the field goal. After watching Houston dismantle Indy, I was surprised to see us doing so well early. But once again we weren't able to put the game away, kept Houston in it, and they managed to come back and win. A missed field goal at the end of regulation for us was all it took.

I can't say much about week 3 since I wasn't here - but really? Losing to the Rams? That bad?! It saddens me that we could be 3-1 or 4-0 by now, but at least the two victories were against our Division. That'll help in the long run.

As for my fantasy team, what can I say? At 2-2 I'm sitting in the middle of the pack, and while I'd love to say I should be higher, it just isn't to be. It's always tough to lose a game where, if you had started different players, you would have won, and that's what happened to me Week 3, but what can you do? Just move on. At least week 3 taught me that I shouldn't be so beholden to where I drafted players, nor what they performed in 2009. This is an entirely different year. Players like Peyton Hillis, LT and Austin Collie are worth starting, even over someone like DeAngelo Williams. It takes me a little while to learn, but I do. I think I've got a good team (if I can shore up my Tight End situation - my lack of having a decent one, that is), and could make a run for the top four, but I'm starting at a disadvantage and still have two more games this season against the top two players yet to come.

2010 Fantasy Football Draft!

If I had known Jesus actually played football, he'd have been my number one pick, no questions. I bet that guy can play a mean game.

So this weekend was the fantasy football draft, our third year running. We play with two keepers, neither of which can have been kept last year, and neither of which can have been taken in rounds 1 or 2 last year. That means the top talent generally gets redrafted and a few of the emerging players from last year stick around on your team into the next year. The past two years I ended up in fourth place, which makes me the only repeat player in the championships, but neither time was I able to win even one game.

I only had two players from last year worth keeping at their spots: Michael Crabtree at 10, and Brandon Marshall at 14. Knocking them out early meant I had two good WRs to start. I had the 7th draft pick, and the first six went exactly where I thought they would, with the top six running backs (Johnson, Peterson, Rice, Jones-Drew, Gore and Turner) dropping off the board before my turn. Steven Jackson was on the board still, but I ended up switching to WRs and picking up Andre Johnson, even though I already had two WRs. Our flex position this year switched from being WR/TE to WR/RB/TE, which meant to me that I should pick up the best RB/WR at that position. I value Andre Johnson a bit more than Steven Jackson, and decided he was the better pick.

Coming back around, I was able to start going heavy into Running Backs, already having three good WRs on the roster. I picked up DeAngelo Williams (passed on Ryan Matthews who was picked up immediately after me... we'll see if that was a good move by me), then Tom Brady in round three as the last top tier QB, before hitting into my running backs heavy again with an occassional WR. I kept being in exactly the wrong place to pick a TE without reaching for it, so I ended up with Owen Daniels at round 9.

So I'm pretty happy with my team, overall. In order, I have Andre Johnson (WR), DeAngelo Williams (RB), Tom Brady (QB), LeSean McCoy (RB), Ricky Williams (RB), Donald Driver (WR), Ahmad Bradshaw (RB), Fred Jackson (RB), Owen Daniels (TE), Michael Crabtree (WR - keeper), Jerrico Cotchery (WR), LaDainian Tomlinson (RB), San Francisco (DST), Brandon Marshall (WR - keeper), Anthony Armstrong (WR).

I've already had to adjust my team, seeing as I didn't pick up a kicker. Fred Jackson was the first to be cut. My first game is against Ryan who got the first overall pick, so I'm facing off against some folks from last year's team like Chris Johnson, DeSean Jackson, Dallas Clark, etc. We'll see how it goes.

Never Too Early For Football

With the 2010 schedule coming out on Tuesday and the draft starting tonight, it's getting a bit more exciting waiting for football to start up again (though with all the movement in the off-season this year, it's hard not to consider the possibilities for Washington).

I took a quick gander at the schedule for the Redskins this year.

Looking over the schedule, we have seven games against playoff teams from last season (Eagles twice, Cowboys twice, Vikings, Packers and Colts). I'd expect we can beat the Eagles and Cowboys once each, but that's already five losses wracked up against us. We did pull the Rams, Lions, Bucs and Bears, so I'll count those as wins giving us 6-5 with the Texans, Titans, Jags and Giants twice. I'd expect we can take the Jags and either the Texans or the Titans. The Giants always seem to have our number, so I'd mark both of them up as losses and come up with an 8-8 season. Compared with a 4-12 last season, that's a nice improvement.

Of course, the draft could change all this, so take it with a grain of salt.

McNabb Comes to Town

I am more optimistic about the Redskins than I have been in years, and that's probably not a good thing. They have a tendency to let me down. They were getting ready to do it this year with the draft - all the calls were for them to use their 1st round pick (4th overall) to grab a new quarterback. It was insanity! Grabbing a new QB was just going to leave us with the massive hole in the offensive line we've dealt with for years.

But now, McNabb is coming to Washington. Which, I have to admit, I still don't understand. I'm happy about it, but I don't understand what Philly was thinking. Sending him to a rival team in the same division? That just doesn't make sense to me. Unless the offers from other teams were significantly lower, how did McNabb end up traded to Washington?

Doesn't matter. Now that we've got a QB lined up (and for a fair price too, I think), that frees our first round draft pick back up. And since we got ourselves a solid QB, we'll want to protect him, and that means draft a frickin' o-lineman! Finally!

Quick question if anyone knows - I know McNabb has only one year left on his contract and there's been some concern that we may only have him a year. Can we franchise tag him next year to keep him around? If so, what does that mean for us?
